1. Rhyming is not the same as songwriting.
2. Rhyming is a part of songwriting but it's not the only thing involved in writing a hot rap song.
3. Clever rhymes is great songwriting..not simply rhyming to rhyme.
4. Cliches are to be avoided in songwriting including hip hop.
5. Rap is not poetry or spoken word: so don't just rhyme over a track; make sure you rhyme on the beat.
6. It's not just about your 16 bars: don't forget the importance of the hook!
7. The beat is not the only thing that needs to have a great rhythm pattern - your verses, the hook, and the beat have to have great rhythm.
8. Since the hip hop track often loops, it's a good idea to switch up your rhythm or your tone from time to time.
9. Auto-tuning is supposed to correct bad pitching so it makes no sense to be off key WITH Auto-tuned vocals!
10. Since rapping involves some singing of your lyrics and staying on key, make sure that your producer has great pitch.
11. When your producer has great pitch, he can help you sing or rap on key and make sure your pitch is the right pitch to the track you chose.
12. Producing is not beatmaking; producing involves vocal coaching a session for example or vocal arrangements...
13. The track you choose should be hot within the first 10 seconds of hearing it. If not, some A & Rs won't even listen to your 16 bars!
14. Lastly, try your hand at writing R & B songs too as rappers make some great R & B songwriters!
