I used to be so against sampling. Then I got lucky enough to work with DJ Toomp on a few of his new sessions for TIP (well BE IN THE ROOM) and the way I saw him incorporating old samples with new, original keys ... wow, that shit was fresh.

Now I'm doing a mix of both.

If ya gonna sample, you better chop hard and flip the script or you ain't doin it any justice. Can't stand when cats just put they drums under a 20 bar loop.

That doesn't take any skillz.

So you are saying if the sample is chopped and flipped to where the original artist cant even recognize their song then its all good to sample? Or thats saying that its a good sample becasue its not a 20 bar loop with a drum kit?

Ok so i feel like sampling should be done on an original creation and should not be done excessively......for example....a lot of texas producers are sampling other texas songs but excessively......!!!

Isnt that like a style and trademark in Texas though? I have heard that over the years with Texas hip hop music.

Lol I just feel music is music, No matter what you make it with, your voice is an instrument so is a garbage can lid, a record player and lunch tables.

To elaborate some, if you decide to make a song and all you have is a record, you find the break and if you have some dj skills you get it to loop. My cousin came up in the 80's and was on the rap scene. those cats "stole" entire drum breaks. And looped them, the first true hip hop was looped over breaks from other songs.

As a producer however you got to have both skills, i feel to be effective. Knowing and understanding music is a big step. You don't have to know how to p[lay everything musical but understanding how to peice music together, molding melodies in order to create your music.

That last statement is why sampling will stay apart of music. Being able to mold sounds isnt exactly easy. there is a trick to it and it is done right, it makes a good "totally new song." Just cause you play the song and create something original doesn't mean it has better quality or is more satisfying for the producer. A lot of guys can't play a lick, and they originals sound awful. lol. But they still understand the fundamentals of harmony and have rhythm. You have a lot of what i call shadow samplers.
____Dre, Lil John, Toomp, Timberland
Cats like that who shadow there beats with bits of colorful samples. Just not clouding the sound of there new idea. Young producers make that mistake and nowadays a lot of mistakes are made.

I feel you and understand you on the "Shadow Producers". Just enough of sampling to add flavor but not to over saturate the sound. Its not sample driven but it is apart of the music. My only problem are with those that sample and over do it and dont do the sample any justice.

Chop Style sampling was done first by Marley Marl. A kick here. A snare there. It was smart because the sample are already EQ'd. When melodies are sampled, there beatsmith (because everyone who makes beats ain't a producer) should be ready to pay for that. AND A LOT of times they don't think they should. When Just Blaze did "BREATH" for Fabolous, they couldn't get the sample cleared. The original artist made Just give up all of the publishing to clear the sample. The record was so big that they had no choice, plus it was already on the radio. Fast forward to present day, the sample game Kanye and Heatmakerz employed is all but dead. The soul sample have been raped and all of the loopsters are falling off. I agree with Jon Linen, a real producer has to be versatile and creative.

I would like to get more into sampling. Everything I do is Original. I know sampling is the "in" thing and I would like to get more into it, however, there is a benefit when you make everything from scratch it's like your own "baby". You start with a rough draft, add to it, take away, add breaks, add new instrumentation and you have masterpiece!
