Is The Singer As Important As The Song Writer?

Would you rather have a fire singer on your production team who can sing any without effort and potentially be a HIT? Or would you rather have a fire writer who can write a song that could potentially be a HIT?

Tough question homie..... It would be ideal to have them one in the same, but we all know it doesn't work that way. Being a production company, I'd have to say writer. Songs last longer than the singers in most cases, plus songs don't run late to sessions and ned tea and honey before hand......lol. just joking, but I'm not. ~ P

I most definitely agree. Singers come and go a dime a dozen...but a real good writer......man if you got one snatch em up!

Hmmm.
I've seen and heard reference tracks. If you're shopping the SINGER, then the singer is important.
But since you will probably be shopping the SONG, I know it would have to be well written.

...*whispers* sometimes, its best to reference the song with a mediocre singer so, the artist can see the POTENTIAL of the song...

Appreciate the words Cam of advise Cam. So you are basically saying that it depends on what the producer is looking for in a project to give value to which is more important between the singer and song writer?

I would rather have a dope writer that can express truly what the song is saying and make you feel you are in that situation verses just a voice that delivers the message. W#hen I hear a song that sounds good I'm like " Damn who wrote that" not so much who's singing it.

Good point Expresshon. So how do you go about knowing if a writer is consistant and can really pull out a pen and make magic consistantly?

I, for one, think the writer is more important. How many times have you heard a good song, and even though the singer may be sub-par or worse, you think something to the effect of "MAN, Neyo/Jazmine Sullivan/Joe/your favorite writer must've wrote this joint!". Think in contrast, how many times you've heard a song and thougt "Man, who wrote this for Beyonce? She sounds good, butthe song sucks..." Maybe I'm just speaking for me, but I would shoot for a writer. and I'm a singer....
