Many funds and venture capital investment companies are currently investing in music-related businesses. To improve understanding of this trend, MIDEM is dedicating a special conference to the subject on 19 January. The event will bring together four major investors involved in financing the music industry and related services: DN Capital, Benchmark Capital, Ventech, and Power Amp Music.
Who are these investors? Why invest in music-related areas? What are their investment strategies? What kinds of investment are most appealing, from investing in startups, to financing artists' careers or live events and catalogue acquisition? What are the potential pitfalls? What are the benefits to the music industry in soliciting financing from these investors? These are just a few of the questions our guest investors will answer.
Venture capital firms Benchmark Capital, DN Capital and Ventech are all well known for their significant investment in new or nascent companies in information technology sectors, often with a musical connection like Awdio.com, believe, Musiwave, MXP4 in the case of Ventech; and Shazam for DN Capital. Dave Goldberg will be representing Benchmark Capital at the conference. Former Vice President and General Manager of Yahoo! Music, Goldberg is currently "Entrepreneur in Residence" at Benchmark. Investment fund Power Amp Music specializes in financing the careers of artists, both established and upcoming. Last month, Power Amp Music announced it is financing the release of the ninth album from Madness in 2009, the year of the band's 30th anniversary.
