"Nelson wears many professional hats including clinical psychologist, educator, composer, arranger, trombonist, playwright, clinician, veteran of the Count Basie Orchestra (1978-81). He has played with Kenny Clarke, Billy Eckstine and Earl "Fatha" Hines, Jay McShann, Sarah Vaughan, Joe Williams & Gerald Wilson; recorded with Walt Harper, Nathan Davis and Count Basie; has co-led jazz groups featuring Joe Harris and Andy Bey. He was a featured soloist at the 2007 IAJE Convention with big bands conducted by Dr. David Baker and David Sanford. His composer credits consist of over 300 original compositions including movie scores and soundtracks. He presently is an adjunct professor at CCAC in psychology. A Former Regents’ Lecturer at University of California, Santa Cruz in whole-brain jazz and creative writing (2003). His lecture series includes the Creative Mind, The Pittsburgh Jazz Legacy, The Crawford Grill: Spirit House of Jazz, and The Metaphysics of Music and The Zen of Jazz. He has written original lyrics to 125 bebop and hard bop standards that form the libretto basis of a series of 5 Boperettas he has prepared for the stage. He is a founding partner in the development of the African American Innovators Conservatory (AAIC), a Board Member of the African American Jazz Caucus, Inc. (AAJC) and an Advisor to the the Afro-American Music Institute, Inc. for over 26 years. He founded the Pittsburgh Jazz Network on the ning platform to celebrate the famous jazz legacy of his home town. He has invented a unique ten inch long, brass instrument he calls the "Trombetto" on which he can play 6 octaves chromatically."
He takes you on a journey regarding the many impacts of sound, it's related musical foundations, affects; effects and gives tips to the aspiring composer/producer or songwriter to incorporate.
